Kite Surfing in Kelowna

Kite Surfing in Kelowna

No matter the season, provided that the beaches aren’t frozen over yet, you can find kite surfing in Kelowna, BC, Canada. This gorgeous water sport has taken off in the last decade and with the spring and summers being unusually windy it is a growing culture.

Here in Kelowna, when it is a windy day, many of us flock to the beach to watch the many kite surfers looking to catch some air on Okanagan Lake.

It’s a beautiful sight, one of many in Kelowna, with the many colours of their kites, their bodies being flung into the air like acrobats, the surrounding mountains and vineyards making it all rather magical. On this particular day Rotary Beach Park was the place to gather while (most were) socially distancing.

I am a sucker for any kind of water sport. I love to watch from the beach with camera in hand to see what I can capture.

Our beaches are rather busy, despite social distancing measures, which makes kite surfing in Kelowna rather challenging. As a bystander, you must be careful not to step on anyone’s kite lines as they untangle and set up their kits. The wind poses one challenge as they try and make their way with their kites, strings and board to the water. Pair this with 30 others doing the same, awaiting their turn on the beach, as well as on lookers, I imagine it can be an ordeal just getting into the water.

But persistence is key and pays off as you are shot into the air with the help of a wave’s edge and an incredible gust of wind. I imagine it is just as thrilling to do as to see from the beach side.

I ask that you please take a moment to subscribe to my YouTube channel and hit that bell next to it for notifications. It is much appreciated as I look to make more of these videos and sharped my skills with Premier Pro. My husband and I are also studying for our Canadian drone certification course which has been mandatory for drone operation, no matter if it is a hobby or for business, since June of 2019. I am very much looking forward to it!
