Craving Connection? Watch These Storytellers & Educators During Isolation

Craving Connection? Watch These Storytellers & Educators During Isolation

The good news during this crisis? All the helpers!
Are you craving connection during self-isolation?

I’ve rounded up some of my favourite videos and series by storytellers and educators looking to improve life and connection in the time of isolation and social distancing. These people are here for us!

Yale’s Popular Happiness Course is Free!

You can take the Science of Well-Being class free on Coursera as presented by Yale. Practice how to be happy in this rather stressful time in our lives with Professor Laurie Santos.

Professor Michael V Smith’s Live Stories

Inspired to create connection Michael V Smith has created story time.
But let me give you some context on how I know him. Back when I was a student at UBC Okanagan learning about creative writing and art history, I was a student of author and filmmaker Michael V Smith (MVS). Recently, he has been graciously offering a live story telling series on his YouTube channel. Each topic is pulled from his magic story bag and no matter what he tells us that particular tale giving us the most human experience we can have in this very strange social distancing age we currently find ourselves trying to survive. Tune in live at 8 pm Pacific time each evening.

Up Your Kitchen Game with Dina Honke’s Olive Oil & Lemons

Olive Oil & Lemons

Local Okanagan based food blogger Dina Honke has been blogging for longer than I have. We’ve bonded over our love of food, wine and travel and frankly she does it better than me. During the winters she has gone on these incredible journeys for a couple months at a time or so allowing for her to thoroughly explore the food scene and even pick up a few tips here and there. She’s been pouring her talents into food recipes and photography as of late. There’s something for everyone in her repertoire and I envy her pantry!

One of my favourite travel vloggers and videographers is Iz Harris and her husband Johnny Harris. I normally follow them for their amazing travel cinematography with the use of drones. I marvel how they get anything done while traveling with two young children and the logistics of it all. She also breaks it down occasionally and shows us her vulnerability with videos like “My son stopped speaking for two years” and “Getting married young with depression”.

Think what you will of the Gwenyth Paltrow brand Goop and their new series called Goop Lab on Netflix…but I found the episode on Wim Hof fascinating. Wim Hof is a man and a method. He has miraculously found a way, through breaking, to withstand the cold and actually thrive within it. Through breathing he can make his body more alkaline being able to suppress illness and stress. Tested in labs and with other subjects also practicing his methods, he and other subjects were able to suppress E-Coli injected into his system so much so that no symptoms were felt by any of the participants. Due to the current crisis Wim Hof has lowered his online classes so you can practice along with him. As always, carefully read the safety warnings.
